Really good drills and suscinct teaching. Nice job. Looking forward to more.

To Milton T and others with comments like his, if you are referring to Jim McLean mentioning the many very successful pro's who use these techniques, please remember he drops names not to impress you but to try to emphacise these drills really work. This is easily evidenced by the really good golfers using them. With Jim's credentials and humility, I doubt he needs to try to impress unknown subscribers like you by dropping names. His career and life's incredible success in this difficult and competetive sport speaks for itself. Back off. You critics sound like spoiled brats, know-it-all's or worse.

Another example of what a really good, valuable video/tip/lesson SHOULD look like ... no long recitation of all the really IMPORTANT folks you've taught it to, no push to buy your self-developed Gimmick of The Week, just good, solid, logical instruction presented in a straight-forward manner. I hope to see more like this from you ...

How is the takeaway for an iron different that the takeaway for a driver??

In general the take-away is quite similar in regards to what you should "feel". Because the driver sits on a flatter plane the take-away is technically more inside with both the arms and club-head than with irons, however in relation to the shaft plane line about the same. Some players set or hinge the club up a little later with the driver than with the irons but that is about it. If you have a great take-away with your irons strive for that same feel with your driver. Hope this helps!

Without seeing your swing I am going to have to assume a few things however, if they are solid and left chances are your path is swinging from out to in and your face is overly closed. My suggestion would be to see if you change your path if that helps and then if not it would be more of a face issue. To improve your path place a head cover just outside and behind your ball and try to feel like you are hitting the inside part of the ball and then swing a little more towards right field. Again this is just an assumption without seeing your swing. Give that a shot. If this still does not help you may have an overly closed clubface and may need to asses your grip and or impact position with your hands. Give it a shot!

Devan-You talked about having the face open when coming into impact and also said have the face square at impact. The bit about rotating the hand closed when having the face open as well. What am I missing? I'm confused.

That’s a good question. What can happen for many people when they try to get this hands forward is that they end up leaving the face open and hitting the ball off the heel and to the right. So this drill is great because it shows you how to bow your wrist into impact and square the face at the same time. The more you twist the shaft the more the face closes. Now depending on your grip you may need a lot or a little. At the end of the day you are looking for a forward leaning shaft and a square clubface. Hope this helps.

This drill would be great for you. However, there are several causes to a club that bottoms out too early. Give these a try. Make sure your left leg and left arm are more forward and impact and your left wrist is flat. Also make sure your upper center (sternum) is maybe an inch or two forward of your set up position at impact. Finally if your swing path is excessively in to out in relation to the target line this can also cause the club to bottom out early. Hard to say without seeing your swing however. But give those things a try and let me know how it goes.

Video is great! Look at all the best players and they are able to get that shaft angle at impact to hit it solid every time... All have different ways of getting there but thats the moment of truth. Good way to practice how it feels!

Great to hear! In general yes. However, as your clubs get longer espeically with your driver you have to alter your set-up so you dont hit down quite so much. Otherwise it transfers pretty well to everything.

When I try this drill, my clubface is always open at the ball. How do I prevent the ball from pushing to the right. Many of my solid hits are pushed 30 deg right

Another really good question. As I mentioned in this video, you must have a rotation of the left forearm so that the back of your hand is facing the target at impact, if you can see all the knuckles on your left hand and your hands are forward generally that will leave the face open. That’s why the twisting of the shaft as I described in the video is so important. If you have any questions let me know. My email is devan @jimmclean.com

Where on the ball do you aim to hit, below the equator ? I almost never finish my swing a bad habit to break.

That can depend on the person. However if you fail to finish your swing try to feel like the fastest part of your swing is the 3 feet past the ball. This will help propel you to a full finish and make you swing rather than hit at the ball.
